Newcomers High School in Long Island City, Queens, is a school for immigrant children. The school librarian, Nelida Rodriguez, has sponsored visits by Hibakusha Stories several times. As in other schools for immigrants, the courage and tenacity of the hibakusha strikes a special cord. In the 2011 – 2012 school year, the borough of Queens had more immigrant students than any other borough – 24,370 or 8.3% of all public school students. 45% of the students at Newcomers are Hispanic, 45% are Asian, .5% Native American, .5% Pacific Islander, 4.5% Black and 4.5% White. 87% are English Language Learners.
