Each time hibakusha come to New York to tell their testimonies to high school students, we arrange for them to speak to the United Nations interns and guides. The guides are the public face of the United Nations. Since there is a disarmament exhibit with important relics from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we feel it is important that the guides can more effectively convey the consequences of nuclear weapons upon hearing the first-hand testimony of atomic bomb survivors. Among the relics on display in the exhibit is a stone statue of St. Agnes from Nagasaki’s Urakami Cathedral. The seared ribbons of stone that scar her back are an unforgettable reminder of the heat generated by the atomic bomb.
