Youth Arts New York, the parent organization of Hibakusha Stories, grew out of the Gateway Institute for Pre College Education program at Jamaica High School, Queens.  Queens is the most ethnically diverse borough in New York City.  The Queens Library serves 59 languages.  Many of the students in the borough are immigrants.  In the 2010 Census, 39.7% of the population was White, 19.1% Black or African American, 22.9% Asian, 13.7% from some other race, and 4.5% of two or more races.  The messages the students learn from the hibakusha spread around the world.
